Devon won by an innings and 354 runs on the second day. It was their first win in the Championship. The margin was a new Championship record, exceeding the innings and 260 runs by which Northamptonshire beat Hertfordshire at Northampton in 1901. The Devon total of 533 for 7 wickets declared was the highest of the season and just 5 runs short of the existing record. For Devon, Hingston's 178 was the highest individual innings of the season and included 8 fours, 15 threes and 27 twos. Aston scored 116 not out containing 12 fours, 5 threes and 17 twos, Orchard 99 with 5 fours, and Light 54 with 6 fours. Hingston and Orchard put on 226 for the Devon fourth wicket, which was the highest for the season and a new Championship record, exceeding the 205 added by M W Wright and F H Mitchell for Buckinghamshire against Wiltshire at Trowbridge in 1899. Other large partnerships were 96 between Hingston and Light for the second wicket, which was the second highest of the season, and 95 for the seventh wicket between Aston and Davies, which was the highest for that wicket during the season. Light took 10 wickets in the match for 49 runs. The 23 maidens bowled by Light in the Dorset second innings were the second highest during the season, and the 36 maidens he bowled in the match were also the second highest. The 138 runs conceded by Bowley in the Devon innings were the second most during the season.
