This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
This return match was drawn, with the teams tied on first innings and sharing half a point each. The match between the two sides at Wolverhampton in June had been won by Staffordshire. There were several interruptions due to the weather on the first day, and rain prevented further play after the close of the Staffordshire innings at 5.15 pm on the second. For the home team, Thompson's 138 included 17 fours, 5 threes and 10 twos, an innings of 2 hours and 35 minutes. With Hansell, he added 105 for the third wicket. For Staffordshire, Stratton batted just short of four hours for his 162, which was the second highest individual innings of the season, and unlike Thompson, he is reported as giving several chances. The innings contained 20 fours, 1 three and 14 twos. He added 110 runs for the fourth wicket with Fereday, while Briggs and Grimshaw put on 59 runs for the seventh wicket. The team totals of 389 were joint second highest of the season. [An alternative version of this score found in the Staffordshire Scorebook gives in the Staffordshire innings Hartley conceding 112 runs, Tomlin 72, Marshall 60 and Mortimer 64. The version adopted is consistent with the Northumberland averages published in Wisden and other sources.]
