Northamptonshire won by an innings and 204 runs at 2.10 pm on the second day after enforcing the follow on.
The visitors were bowled out twice on the second day in two hours and 45 minutes.
Staffordshire's first innings total of 32 was the third lowest of the season.
For the winners Thompson scored 164 not out with 2 fives, 12 fours, 11 threes and 11 twos, an innings of 4 hours and forty minutes.
It was the third highest innings of the season.
He also took 10 wickets in the match for 41 runs.
He was on the field for all but two minutes of the game, and his all-round performance wa the second best of the season on the basis used in the statistical survey.
Thompson and Wetherall added 97 runs for the seventh wicket, and Thompson and Knight put on 118 runs for the eighth wicket, which was the second highest partnership for that wicket during the season.
The match started late at 1.15 pm on the first day as the Staffordshire team's train had failed, through a misunderstanding, to stop at Northampton and carried on to Bletchley.
