Northumberland won by an innings and 112 runs on the second day after Cambridgeshire followed on 185 runs behind.
The margin of victory was the largest of the season. Press reports indicate that heavy overnight rain made the wicket difficult for the batsmen on the second day. For the winners, Hansell scored 133 in 2 hours and 40 minutes, an innings which included 11 fours, 2 threes and 13 twos. Elsey took 11 wickets in the match for 92 runs. For the losers, Bacon's 52 contained 5 fours. Prest kept wicket for Cambridgeshire when Watts bowled. In the Northumberland innings when he had scored 8 runs, Mortimer reached the career milestone of one thousand runs in championship matches.
