Northamptonshire won by an innings with around 10 minutes to spare on the second day. For the winners, Brown's 123 included 5 sixes, 15 fours, 1 three and 6 twos. He reached his century in 70 minutes. There was 1 six and 12 fours in Thompson's 95 not out and 11 fours in Warren's 67. Thompson and Brown put on 179 runs for the seventh wicket, which was a new record for the competition exceeding the 172 added by F T Higgins-Bernard and P J de Paravicini for Buckinghamshire against Hertfordshire at Watford in 1897. Thompson and Warren put on 130 runs for the eighth wicket, which was also a new record for the Championship, overtaking the 106 added by A J Golding and F Field for Hertfordshire v Buckinghamshire at Watford in 1898. The visitors' total of 442-8 declared was the highest of the season. The 125 runs conceded by W F Whitwell in the Northamptonshire innings were the third highest by a bowler during the year. Bousfield's 160 for Durham consisted of 25 fours, 2 threes and 9 twos, an innings of 3½ hours. In the Durham first innings, Bousfield and J F Whitwell put on 110 runs for the first wicket, and Bousfield and Kirtley 72 for the eighth wicket. Mallett was absent when Durham batted a second time, having caught an early train to London mistakenly believing Durham were safe from defeat.
