Match notes
Queensland set a new State record opening partnership for all Championships matches. With the total nearing three hundred and only one wicket down a total in excess of five hundred seemed a real possibility, a total only once previously achieved and that by Queensland in 1993-94. With May batting well it also seemed that three centuries would be recorded in an innings for the first time. Eventually May was fifth out at 395 with his score on 99, the first player to record that score in all Championships matches. As the afternoon progressed the scoring steadied and the one hundred overs arrived with the total on 491.
The top order A.C.T. batsmen all reached double figures with only Cameron continuing. Later Holcombe and Heading added 103 for the sixth wicket but once they were parted the innings soon ended. With five overs to bat the lower order batsmen were sent to the creases and managed a very creditable 55 runs. In dismissing SL Gaskin, Paul Toohey brought up his fifty wickets in all Championship matches.
