At the end of day 2, East, Louch, Amherst, Small and Booker were the men out in East (2). England had Harris as a given man. The match arose from a VI-a-side single-wicket match between Hampshire and Kent in August 1787 (see SB p75). The papers explain that 'from the 12 men that played in the single wicket match last year, Harris is withdrawn and Capt East undertook to assemble 10 men who joined with Harris would attack the powerful strength of bats': hence this match (although East's side lost). This accounts for the match title despite the presence of some Kent and Hampshire men on the England side. SB and some other sources call the game G East's XI v Paulet's XI: 'Paulet' must be Rev C Powlett, known as a leading Hambledon member (see SB p114 for another instance of the spelling 'Paulet' where 'Powlett' must be meant). The source gives the umpire as Halsey: this is assumed to be Horsey, who makes his playing debut in 'great' matches for Hampshire v Surrey, 2 July 1788.
