Enfield have signed Jon Jon Smuts as professional for season 2017.

 

The 28 year old right handed batsman and slow left arm bowler is currently playing for Eastern Province in his native South Africa where he opens the batting in all three formats of the game.

 

Smuts signed for Bacup in 2011.In his stay at Lanehead Smuts scored 499 league runs at 71.3 with two centuries and he also took 22 wickets at 16.7 with a best of 5-29. His last appearance for Bacup was the most memorable. Smuts smashed the Colne attack for 170.

 

The South African hit fifteen fours and eleven sixes from just 110 balls.

 

He hit his opposite number Mansoor Amjad for 32 off one over with four sixes and two fours. Tim Farragher joined in the fun hitting 84 from 81 balls, including eight fours and two sixes in a club record 3rd wicket stand of 243.

 

The stand was just 5 runs short of the club's highest ever which was also scored at Colne by Everton Weekes and Stanley Entwistle in 1954.

 

He also dominated the action with the ball, taking 5-78.
