Skipper Ponting and vice-captain Clarke piled on misery over the visitors as the hosts powered themselves to a massive 519 for the loss of eight wickets before Ponting declared. Pakistan in reply collapsed to 94 for the loss of 4 wickets.

Ponting resuming on 137 never looked in any sort of discomfort as the skipper powered on plummeting a rudderless and lackluster Pakistani bowling to dust. He was well supported by Clarke who was willing to put his head down to play a patient knock. Ponting registered his fifth double ton while Clarke scored his highest Test score as the duo added a massive 352 in 103 overs. Ponting finally declared the innings when the hosts lost their eighth wicket.

Pakistan in got off to a steady start when Farhat (38, 68 ball, 5x4) and Butt (34 not out, 99 balls, 6x4) added 63 in 22.2 overs before Siddle played the killjoy. Siddle then picked up Khurram Manzoor (0, 4 balls) in the same over as Pakistan slide. Two more wickets fell as Pakistan ended the day at 94 for 4 with a huge mountain to climb.
