Former international umpire of repute David Shepherd died today after a long battle with cancer. He was 68.

 

Sheperd was appointed as a first-class umpire in 1981 and was a popular figure, not only because of his undoubted ability but the manner in which he went about his job. Shepherd was famous for his aversion to the 'Nelson' - scores with a multiple of 111 - which made him hop at the crease between deliveries.

 

Shepherd officiated in 172 ODIs, including three consecutive World Cup finals, and 92 Tests between 1983 and 2005. He was appointed as a first-class umpire in 1981. Shepherd's last Test was the match between West Indies and Pakistan in Kingston in June 2005. His final appearance in an ODI was at The Oval in 2005.
