Match report day 1: Lancs v Glos in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Gloucestershire

Summary of day 1

Only a miracle on the second day of this match can prevent Lancashire from dropping into division two, despite Gary Keedy taking a career best 7 for 95. After losing the toss, three stubborn partnerships combined with poor fielding enabled the visitors to reach 311 for 8 before the predictable declaration in the 101st over. Lancashire must reach 400 runs in 130 overs with losing more than 5 wickets to maintain top flight status (Assuming they go on to win the match). Keedy accounted for Gloucestershire's first seven wickets on a turning pitch. He was denied an eighth wicket when Loye dropped the easiest of chances at mid-off when Adshead was on 36. Bad light stopped play just before 5pm, but owing to Lancashire's exceptional over rate, a full allocation of overs had already been completed.
