Match report day 2: Surrey v Lancs in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Surrey v Lancashire

Summary of day 2

This has to go down as the most depressing, sole destroying and dire performance in the county championship this season. The lack of fire in the players bellies combined with dreadful endless short pitched bowling, poor utilisation of the bowlers and a highly questionable batting line-up, left all the visiting supporters wondering why they had bothered to turn up. An innings defeat beckoned by the close of play and the gateway to division two resembled an open barn door. Every player should take a long hard look at themselves and feel thoroughly ashamed at what they see.

Throughout the day every Surrey player batted with confidence and ease. The gulf in class with both bat and ball was embarrassing. Rikki Clarke (69) should class himself unlucky to be adjudged leg before wicket to Cork in the 67th over. Cork's prolonged appeal appeared to have little or no justification (246-3). By now, Lancashire's sterile cricket by numbers approach was tedious to watch, but a joy to bat against. Ramprakash reached his century from 192 trouble-free balls. The lower order added useful quick runs as Lancashire fought hard to control their negative over rate (Minus 3 at one stage). Surrey's total of 524 all out mid way through the final session (A lead of 314) resulted in Lancashire needing to negotiate 16 overs before the close of play. Alas, Chilton was caught at short leg with the very first ball of the innings and Sutcliffe (17) and Mongia (0) both gave their wickets away before the end of the 10th over to leave the visitors on 57 for 3 at close. Can things get any worse? - yes, not only relegation, but on this performance the wooden spoon beckons!
