Match report Lancs v Warwicks totesport League 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Warwickshire

Summary

For the second consecutive home totesport match, an opposing captain scored a century, but ended up on the losing side. On this occasion, Nick knight scored an unbeaten 122 after the losing the toss and being asked to bat. The Bears posted an imposing total of 251 for 5, which under lights appeared to be a huge ask for the home side to chase down. The early loss of Loye (1) in the first over made victory even more unlikely (2-1). Chilton and Sutcliffe added 64 for the second wicket before Chilton hauled out at mid-on. As the floodlights took hold, Mongia and Sutcliffe steered Lancashire towards their target by maintaining the asking rate of 5.6 runs per over. Sutcliffe reached his 50 in the 22nd over and Mongia one over later. With the score on 191, Sutcliffe failed to ground his bat when attempting a quick single, and Hooper made his way to the crease. Four wickets fell in the next five overs as the new batsmen struggled to come to terms with the conditions. However, appalling fielding, which allowed endless over-throws, combined with a terribly slow over rate left Ian Bell only one minute to bowl the 44th over, or concede six penalty runs. Frantic gestures came from the Lightning balcony alerting Mongia and Mahmood to the fact that only two runs were required from the last eight balls. Mongia who had just reached his hundred from 104 balls, stroked his tenth boundary through the covers to secure a thrilling victory.
