Match report day 1: Sussex v Lancs in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Sussex v Lancashire

Summary for Day 1

In bright conditions, Chris Adams won the toss and elected to bat. An hour into the hosts innings, the weather had completed a full turn - low cloud, poor light and a chilly breeze. By this time Ian Ward was back in the pavilion. His third ball edge was comfortably held by Cork at third slip. Goodwin and Montgomerie added 71 for the second wicket. 8 runs later, Goodwin, Adams and Ambrose were all out, and Sussex were struggling on 79 for 4.

Once again, Lancashire dominated the afternoon session. Martin-Jenkins chased a wide ball from Chapple and was smartly caught by Loye in the gully. Chapple removed Prior's off stump 2 overs later, while Innes edged tamely to Cork at third slip. Mushtaq blasted a quick fire 21 before Hegg held an outstanding diving one-handed catch in front of first slip to send him on his way. Montgomerie reached his fifty in the 51st over with his fifth boundary. Lewry survived a drop at 1st slip before top edging Mahmood to Loye in the gully. Sajid Mahmood yorked Mohammad Akram with the last ball of the 56th over to leave Sussex 5 runs short of a batting point, and Montgomerie stranded on 60. Mahmood 3 for 41

In difficult batting conditions, Lancashire lost the early wicket of Mark Chilton. With just 5 runs to his name, he chopped the ball into his own stumps. Sutcliffe and Loye posted the fifty on the board in the final over before tea (51 for 1). Drizzle and bad light during the interval resulted in the covers being brought onto the pitch. As the rain turned heavier and the light faded, the umpires had no choice but to abandon play early.
