Scorecard: | Lancashire v Sussex |
Summary for Day 3
Picture the scene - It's the third day of four. The sun is shining and Sussex have eased their way to 122 for 1. It's 10 minutes to 3 and the game is drifting toward a draw. Sussex's supporters are noisy and making endless reference to the forthcoming title. Suddenly, Tony Cottey strokes the ball in the air to Glen Chapple fielding at mid-off. 8 balls later, Chris Adams repeats the shot, and Tim Ambrose losses his off stump to setup a hat-trick opportunity. 2 further wickets before the tea interval reduced Sussex to 160 for 7. Mushtaq Ahmed offered a temporary rest bite after the break by smashing 54 runs (8 x 4). However, the last 3 wickets fell in the space of 22 balls to leave Sussex all out for just 251. Hegg enforced the follow-on with 11 overs remaining to be bowled. The visitors appeared to have negotiated their way safely to the close, when Montgomerie inexplicably offered no shot to a delivery from Martin. Nightwatchman Billy Taylor played back to Gary Keedy in the next over to reduce Sussex to 21 for 2. The final day promises to be exciting and eventful, and this time the weather will not deny Lancashire!
Bowling Performance of the Day
2 outstanding performances were on show on the secnd day. John Wood captured 3 wickets in 10 balls to rip the heart out of Sussex's middle order. As mentioned in previous reports this season, Wood always seems to dismiss key players. On this occasion Cottey (40), Adams (1) and Ambrose (0 - first ball). Wood finished with 3 for 17 from 9 overs. Gary Keedy removed 5 Sussex batsmen in three spells of bowling (1 for 28, 3 for 77 and 1 for 1). Keedy managed to extract excellent turn from the pitch and completly outwitted Mushtaq Ahmed (0 for 99). Keedy also dismissed Billy Taylor (0) in the penultimate over of the day to leave the visitors reeling on 21 for 2
Batting Performance of the Day
Murray Goodwin batted throughout Sussex's first innings (118 not out from 247 balls 17 x 4) to attain his third hundred of the season. Goodwin was unable to open the batting in the second innings as he required stitches in his eyebrow wound (See below). Goodwin and Cottey (40) added 94 runs for the second wicket in 26 overs, while Mushtaq (54) teamed up with his overseas partner to add 81 for the eighth wicket in just 17 overs. By batting throughout Sussex's innings, Goodwin became only the second player to carry his bat in the last 8 years
Fielding Performance of the Day
The variable bounce made life very difficult behind the stumps for Warren Hegg. On more than one occasion, Hegg was forced to stop the ball using his pads. He must have acquired a number of bruises by the close of play. Unfortunately, Hegg conceded 8 byes in the space of two deliveries which enabled Sussex to reach 250. The team held a number of fine catches close to the bat. Martin-Jenkins was smartly taken by Stuart Law at first slip following an aggressive shot which rebounded from Sutcliffe fielding in close on the off side
Highlights of the Day
- Dismissing 6 Sussex batsmen for just 35 runs in the 50 minutes leading up to tea.
- Forcing Sussex to follow-on by preventing them reaching 300 (Thus stopping Sussex from winning the title)
- Capturing 2 wickets in the last 3 overs of the day to leave Sussex struggling on 21 for 2
- Stuart Law remaining unbeaten on 163
Lowlights of the Day
- Conceeding 8 byes which allowed Sussex to gain a second batting point.
- Losing a sixth wicket and presenting Sussex with a second bowling point (Difficult to avoid this under the circumstances - trying to accumulate quick runs in the morning session)
Discussion Point of the Day
Murray Goodwin sustained a cut on his right eyebrow after misjudging an attempt to hook Peter Martin in the 50th over. Both physio's spent 10 minutes patching the wound while the fielders stood around in a circle watching. Eventually, Goodwin carried on batting despite appearing to be slightly dizzy
