THORNTON, Charles Inglis.
Amateur.
Born at Llanwarne, Herefordshire, 20th March 1850.
Died at Marylebone, London, 10th December 1929.
He was the second son of the Rev. W.J. Thornton, rector of Llanwarne, Herefordshire, and prebendary of Hereford Cathedral. He was educated at Eton, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1866-68, being captain in 1868, he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the University cricket eleven 1869-72, winning his blue all four years and being captain in 1872. He played in 216 first-class matches, including 18 for Kent (1867-72) and 29 for Middlesex ((1875-85). He was a tremendous hitter of the ball. He originated the Scarborough Cricket Festival. He was a timber merchant with the firm of Raffety, Thornton & Co Ltd., 42 Old Broad Street, London E.C., retiring in 1912. He was also a director of the Royal Brewery, Brentford.
No trace of him can be found in the 1881 Census.
