Born at Edinburgh, Scotland, 19th March, 1849.
Died at Blackhall Castle, Banchory, Kincardine, Scotland, 12th September 1902.
The son of Alexander Russel of the Scotsman, 9 Chester Street, Edinburgh, he was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh. He was a merchant residing at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, so that his county cricket was for Northumberland 1871-82. His first-class cricket was mostly with the MCC and he played a total of 79 first-class games. He also played for Ireland and Scotland, but not fist-class. His brother Patrick played one first-class match for the MCC.
He could not be found in the 1881 Census.
