PENN, Alfred.

Born at Lewisham, London, 6th January 1855.
Died at The Cedars, Lee, London, 18th October 1889.
The son of J. Penn of The Cedars, Lee, Kent, he was the younger brother of Frank senior (Kent and England) and William (Kent). He was uncle of Eric Frank (Cambridge University) and Frank junior (Kent) and brother-in-law of J.F.Green (MCC) and F.Stokes (Kent). He played in 48 first-class matches, 41 of then for Kent 1875-84. He was known as Dick.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living with his widowed mother, Ellen, aged 54, at The Cedars, Lee, Kent, with his two married brothers, John and William, aged 33 and 31, partners as marine engineers, employing a workforce of 970. Also present are their wives Amy F. and Constance M., aged 24 and 25, and both born in Lowestoft, and their children Amy D. aged 3, Marion J. aged 1, Eric F. aged 3 and Constance O. aged 1 (whose is which?!). Alfred is unmarried, aged 26. His sisters are also present, Ellen Green, aged 28, with her husband Joseph F., a 34 year old shipowner, with their daughter Ellen M., aged 1, and Isabella Stokes, aged 24, with her husband Frederick Stokes, a 30 year old solicitor, with their son Frederick F., aged four months. There is a butler and twenty other domestic servants.
