Brief profile of Irwin Grimshaw

GRIMSHAW, Irwin.

Born at Farsley, Leeds, Yorkshire, 4th May 1857.
Died at Farsley, Leeds, 18th January 1911.
A useful middle order right-handed batsman he learned his cricket with the Farsley United Club and at Bingley. He first appeared in first-class cricket in 1880 and between then and 1887 appeared in 138 matches, 125 of them for Yorkshire. From 1885 his address is given as New Inn, Farsley, where he was presumably landlord, until at least 1891. After his spell with Yorkshire he went a professional at the Holmfirth, Nelson (Lancashire), Cudworth and Dobcross clubs. In his last years he fell upon hard times and died in poor circumstances and was buried at Calverley.
In 1881 he was at the home of his father, Oliver aged 46 an unemployed gamekeeper, and his mother Sabina, aged 45, at High Street Front, Calverley cum Farsley, Yorkshire. Irwin was aged 23 unmarried and an unemployed county cricketer and his elder brother Samuel aged 26 was an unemployed worsted mule spinner and his two younger brothers, Arthur aged 20 a mulespinner and John Thomas age 8. His three sisters were Rachel aged 16 a cloth mender, Clara aged 11 a textile mill hand and Annie aged 4.
