In the first innings, Fleming had posted a career best score 274 not out. His Test aggregate of 343 (274 not out + 69 not out) is now the third best in the history of Test Cricket. Fleming also joined England's Graham Gooch (333 + 123 vs.India at Lord's in 1990), Australia's Mark Taylor (334 not out + 92 against Pakistan at Peshawar in 1998-99 and India's Sunil Gavaskar (205 + 73 vs. West Indies at Bombay in 1978-79) to have scored a 200-plus as well as a 50-plus in the same Test match as Captain.
During the course of his second innings knock of 69 not out, Fleming also established a New Zealand record for most runs in a Test match, surpassing Martin Crowe's aggregate of 329 (30 + 299) against Sri Lanka at Wellington in 1990-91.
Amongst the batsmen with 300-plus runs in a Test match, Fleming is now the only one to have remained unbeaten in both innings of the Test.
