A profile of G.G.Hearne

Player:GG Hearne

A member of the famous Hearne family, brother of Test players Alec and Frank, cousin of Test player J.T. and first-class cricketers G.F., Herbert and Walter; uncle to Test player G.A.C., and son of George Hearne of Middlesex. "GG" played just one Test, when he toured South Africa with W.W.Read's side in 1891/92 (his brother Alec and cousin J.T. were in the same side, and his brother Frank in the opposition!). The eldest of the Kentish Hearne brothers, he made his debut for Kent in 1875, on the ground where his father was groundsman, and played for them for another twenty-one years. A left-hand round arm bowler, he bowled fast-medium with a natural break from leg to off, resulting in many dismissals caught in the slips. Initially not much of a bat, he improved through his career, using a very correct, largely defensive method. He generally fielded at point or mid-wicket. A hard working cricketer, he became a genuine all-rounder, in 1886 making nearly 1,000 runs at an average of over 40.
